Living A Happy & Meaningful Life

Feb 27, 2016 | Living Well, Thoughts

Hello! Mrs. Saturday here. These last few months have been eye-opening and have made me want to live in the present as much as possible. So much so that I have this urge to drop everything with Mr. Saturday and go live in the mountains, or on a boat! Ok, so this might appear to be a mid-life crisis, but hopefully Iโ€™m still too young for one of those.

I think you all would agree that nothing affects your life more than your health. Without your health, well, there is nothing else.ย  So my life was turned upside down when I sprained my ankle a few months ago. Thank goodness it was only a sprained ankle, although apparently a clean break can often heal more quickly. In any case, it still knocked me off my feet (literally) and itโ€™s been a slow recovery.

Without being able to do all the things I love, like dancing, hiking, and traveling, and even the things I donโ€™t love but have come to appreciate, like cleaning, driving, and running errands, my life came to a stand-still and I had a lot of time to think. I never realized how much I took for granted just being able to walk. Itโ€™s amazing how much this can change your life. I have a feeling many of you can relate and recall some time in your life that has shocked you into taking a good hard look at what you want in life.

Parting clouds with sun beams

I know this may seem so minor in the grand scheme of things, but I believe I will look back at this time in my life as a major turning point. During the last few months, I have longed to be able to live a life full of meaning, purpose, and happiness. Whatโ€™s interesting is that my definition has changed over the course of the last three months. At the beginning, I just wanted my life back. Now I want more out of my life. I want to accomplish more and live a life closer to what it would look like if money weren’t a factor. So what changed? I suppose itโ€™s been an accumulation of events and signs. In short, I want to remove the negativity in my life..

Mr. Saturday and I get excited about planning for our future, but Iโ€™ve recently been realizing the importance of living the life youโ€™ve always wanted right now, well, at least to the best of your ability. The bills still have to be paid, and we still need to be able to save for retirement, but Iโ€™d like to start incorporating things into my life now that make me feel whole, and make any necessary changes that will help de-stress my life. Travel is important to us, and we certainly try to maximize our allotted vacation time. Weโ€™re also weekend warriors. Sometimes itโ€™s more simple changes in our day-to-day lives that will make the most difference, like cleaning out a closet or the garage. We spend most of our days working for a living, so it’s important to evaluate is and how your current job is enhancing your life.

So while I have the urge to run for the mountains, I just need to make some adjustments in life. In the coming months, Iโ€™ll keep you posted about what brings meaning, purpose, and happiness to my life and how I plan to integrate more of that into my daily life so that Iโ€™m living in the present while planning for my future.

What makes you happy in life?

Love this sentiment of living the life you want now. I think we sometimes tend to sacrifice too much today in pursuit of FI. Weekend warriors sounds like a great compromise. I love travel too, and I am trying to go to restaurants of countries I want to visit – cheaper but you get a taste (pardon the pun) of that country, without the expense of travelling.

That’s a great idea! We actually enjoy ethnic foods best, so we’ll try to picture ourselves in India and Japan when we eat at our favorite restaurants. Although Switzerland is on my short bucket list… Hmm, I wonder what they eat?
