More Time for Mrs. Saturday

Dec 12, 2015 | Lifestyle, Thoughts

Hello! I’m Mrs. Saturday.

We are excited to have you join us on our journey to early retirement! As the New Year approaches, many of us are thinking about our New Year’s resolutions and it’s a good time to reaffirm your goals for the near future. I know one thing is for sure… my goals require lots of time! Is there ever enough time to the day, week, month, or year?

Some of my previous New Year’s resolutions…

  • Exercise more/get in shape
  • Eat healthier
  • Spend more time with family
  • Spend more time with friends
  • Start a garden
  • Fix up the house
  • Get more involved in the community

Do any of these sound familiar? Would I sound ambitious if I told you that this year my New Year’s resolution is to strive for ALL of these things? These all have one thing in common – they require more time!

What would more time mean to you?

For me, it means being able to make more elaborate meals and eat healthier. It would mean having fun exercising more outdoors and enjoying more family dinners. Time is also necessary in order to travel – and I have a lot of travel ambitions. My Corporate America job doesn’t provide me with very much time to travel. I actually really enjoy my job, but who wouldn’t love to stop and smell the flowers in Brazil, the Caribbean, or some other exotic destination?

With all of this planning for the future, just don’t forget to live in the moment!

That’s in a nutshell what early retirement means to me – to have more time to do what I really enjoy in life. So, I might as well make “more time” my New Year’s resolution.

Question is: What does early retirement mean to you?

For me, early retirement means the freedom to pursue my interests, not just to pursue the next dollar. I’m well on the way to transitioning my work away from freelance CPA work and to financial coaching. Not (yet!) as lucrative, but more personally satisfying…..which is what early retirement means to me! After having built my CPA-client practice, it’s fun to work in another field that so enjoyable to me.

I also enjoy the flexibility in my schedule. Now I can write for my site, run errands, get my workouts in, etc. when I want, not just when I can. I know every retiree says this, but I really don’t know how I got it all done when I was working 40+ hours a week!

Great post. Thanks for sharing it……

Thanks John! Mrs. Saturday got a smile on her face when she saw a comment on the first blog she’s ever made. 🙂

I can definitely relate to that. I love computers, but after being at a desk for so many years, part of my day will have to be outside! Nature is such a recharge to the soul. Isn’t it amazing how much we fill our days even while we’re working? We try as much as we can to fill it with things that will enrich our lives or to make our future better.

Good for you on building your business! I’m sure you’ll get to that goal soon.

Hi Mrs. Saturday – Goods luck with your New Year’s goals. Maybe you can exercise with Mr. S and check off your first and third goals. That’s what we do, while listening to inspiring podcasts. Mr G arises at 4:30 and does the Miracle Morning. He swears it gives him more time. I’m just not THAT inspired yet.

I take to heart what you said about living in the moment. Life is now. We can’t put it on hold while we wait for all these other pieces to fall in place.

Mrs. Saturday here! Thanks for your comment Mrs. Groovy. It’s easier said than done, but living in the moment is definitely important. Mr. Saturday is all about podcasts while exercising – it’s a great use of time! Meanwhile, I like to soak up the music in my Zumba classes. And, I completely agree – freedom is groovy!

When I retired early the first time I had an idea of what my life would be like and it turned out to be very close. Every one of your resolutions is exactly what our early retirement experience has been. It also meant being able to pursue anything of interest and my passions including starting an encore career and a second early retirement when I felt I was ready for the next adventure, whatever that will be. Great post and good luck on your retirement goals and New Years resolutions.

I’m glad to hear that your retirement is meeting your expectations! That just adds to our motivation, so I thank you for that! While my resolutions are all things I aspire for, the next step is for Mr. Saturday and I to start putting together a more thorough plan on what our passions are and how we plan to fulfill them in retirement. It’s all very exciting!
